2022 Singapore Prize Shortlist Announces New Partnership With Conservation International

The Singapore prize is a biennial award that honours work in the country’s four languages. It has been in operation for 30 years.

Its theme this year is resonance — how literature can trigger emotions and memories. Organizers say the choice of resonance is particularly appropriate this time, as the still-ongoing coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect people’s lives.

This year’s shortlist includes a debut author, as well as authors who have won the prize in previous years. It also includes the oldest writer to be shortlisted, 91-year-old Wang Gungwu in the Chinese poetry category. He is joined by Suratman Markasan in the Malay creative nonfiction category. This marks the first time in the prize’s history that two writers have been shortlisted for multiple categories in their respective languages.

Besides the traditional 12 categories, this year’s prize has a new Readers’ Favourite exercise that lets the public vote for their favorite book from the shortlisted works in each of the four languages. The winner in each language will win $1,000. The winner of this category will be announced at a ceremony August 25 at the Victoria Theatre.

In addition to the prestigious monetary prizes, winners receive state decorations and a certificate of award. They are also recognized at a special awards dinner and given the opportunity to share their work in a public forum. Some of the awardees will have the opportunity to participate in a global exhibition.

TEP’s Founder and CEO, Loh Wee Phong, said that “As we celebrate the tenth anniversary of The Earthshot Prize, we are thrilled to announce a partnership with Conservation International (CI) for the next phase of the prize.” CI brings its extensive knowledge of biodiversity conservation programs and sustainability financing across Southeast Asia and beyond to guide the selection of Prize Winners and connect them with partners committed to scalable, innovative solutions for people and the planet.

As part of the new partnership, TEP is bringing the winning finalists to the World of Interiors Asia-Pacific (WAFX) this November for thought leadership and innovation in design. This will be a unique opportunity for the finalists to showcase their work to global industry leaders and influencers and attract new supporters for their scalable environmental solutions.

TEP will be launching its new website in October to feature the winning finalists, as well as their stories of how they are using science and technology to solve real-world problems that affect us all. The finalists will be sharing their innovative solutions at WAFX, with the goal of inspiring and empowering the global community to take action for our shared future. Those who are interested in attending WAFX can get their free tickets here. For those who are unable to attend, the livestream of the event will be available on TEP’s Facebook page.
