The first team winner of this year’s Yidan Prize will go to War Child Alliance for its “Can’t Wait to Learn” programme, a low-cost mobile learning platform that provides marginalised children in countries affected by conflict with foundational literacy and numeracy skills. This programme helps them unlock their potential and prepare for the future. It will use the prize money to expand its services for more marginalised children and increase its presence in countries where there are large refugee populations.

A HK$1 million reward for a Hong Kong footballer who was involved in an incident of match-fixing at the Asian Games has raised concerns about the integrity of the sport. The Football Association of Hong Kong has said it is investigating the case and will take appropriate measures. The association said it would work closely with disciplinary bodies and law enforcement agencies to ensure the integrity of football in the city.

An 85-year-old veteran actor who was a matinee idol in the 1950s and 1960s has won the best actor award at the Hong Kong Film Awards for his role as a hitman-turned-noodle maker in black comedy Time. He is the oldest winner of this prize in the history of the awards. He received a standing ovation onstage.

HK$15m prize for Paralympic gold

In addition to the HK$130m in the 2024-25 financial year that the Hong Kong SAR government has allocated to support sports for people with disabilities, a HK$15m incentive scheme will be launched next year for athletes who win medals at this summer’s Paralympic Games in Paris. The scheme will provide incentives to a maximum of HK$5m for the winner of each individual event, HK$3m for runners-up and HK$2m for those who finish fourth to eighth.

This year, the HK Prize also includes a Public Vote prize for students to choose their favourite entries. Each winning student will receive HK$4,000 and the school of the Public Vote Prize Winner will be rewarded with HK$10,000. For more information on the competition, visit the HK Prize website. The judging process is carried out professionally, objectively and impartially. It is supervised by the Advisory Council and overseen by a Compliance Oversight Team staffed by professionals in law, finance, auditing and public affairs. This will help ensure that the operation of the prize is in line with scientific and rigorous standards, as well as fostering a culture of excellence in science and technology. The judging panel is made up of experts from the fields of biomedicine, medicine and social sciences. The prize is supported by the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine. The Advisory Council is chaired by Dr Peter Lam.
